What To Do Before Turning on Your Heating System

As the leaves fall and the temperatures start to drop, you know that soon you’ll need to turn on your heating system to keep your home cozy and comfortable for the winter. Before that first cold day, there are a few steps you should take to ensure your system is working.

  1. Do a test run: Run your system for 10-15 minutes to ensure it is blowing warm air or the baseboard heat is warming up. If it emits a strange odor, makes a loud noise, or only produces cold air, you should immediately shut the unit off and contact Homestead to have one of our experienced techs get it back in shape for the winter season.
  2. Test your thermostat: Switch your thermostat to heat to be sure it is communicating with your heating system. If it seems like it’s not communicating with your system, put in fresh batteries. If that doesn’t help, consider replacing the thermostat.
  3. Schedule an annual maintenance: We recommend cleaning your system once a year. This helps your system keep running at optimal performance and lowers operating costs. Having professional maintenance annually will also increase the longevity of the system.
